Sunday At Surville.

On a Sunday morning in a quiet backwater of St Helier, close to Surville Cemetary, people were enjoying a blustery day on their allotments.

Started over a year ago now the Parish devoted a plot of land for people seeking an allotment.

Since then the interest has grown enormously and the parish is now looking to secure another plot to meet the demands of interested parties.

Over thirty plots sit behind the hedgerows. People grow vegetables, flowers or whatever takes their fancy. Most just want to get out of town and find somewhere quiet to breathe. they want to experience the real feel of standing in a landscape and helping something grow.

A sense of community has grown as members share seeds, plants, ideas and help. The cost of a rotavator is quartered and a transport problem solved as people work together.

An allotment isn't just for growing small crops, it creates and binds a sense of community. Loneliness is banished and friendships flower.

Adam takes Bessie for a walk. Ponies trot and little ones scoot through the spring sunshine.

Anyone wishing to put their name down for a plot should contact Tony Andrews at the Parish hall.
